Here's What You'll Be Getting

Written by award-winning playwright Jean Tay, Chinatown Crossings is a site-specific theatre performance based on stories collected from the Chinatown community.


Meet Kunalan (played by Pavan Singh), an Indian man who grew up in a Chinatown shophouse during the 1960s; his evolving friendship with Ting Ting (played by Sabrina Sng) his landlady’s feisty daughter and Fong Cheh (played by Jodi Chan), a majie (domestic helper) who became a surrogate mother to him during his growing up years.


Beyond just a walking tour, Chinatown Crossings will bring you on an unique adventure as you experience living in an old Chinatown shophouse; relive the memories of Chinatown’s colourful past through a lush soundscape and discover the many lost and forgotten practices and art forms, of Chinatown’s vibrant community.

Kunalan

Pavan J Singh is an actor and theatre artist with almost 20 years of experience.


Selected theatre credits include the Haresh Sharma’s This Chord and Others (Esplanade: The Studios 2017), Shakespeare’s Hamlet (Theatre of Others 2017), my original works Refuge and The Boy and the Curse of the Magic-Far-Seeing Thing (Skinned Knee Productions 2016), The Man Who by Peter Brook and Marie Helene Estienne (Hot Chocolate Theatre 2016), Fat Kids Are Harder to Kidnap (How Drama, Paris Fringe 2017 and DC Fringe 2016), Dark Room by Edith Podesta (Esplanade Studio Series 2016), The Good, The Bad and The Sholay by Shiv Tandan (Checkpoint Theatre 2015) and 2 Houses by Lim Yu-beng (Sin-Pen Colony 2014).

Jodi graduated from the University of Exeter, UK, with a Master of Arts degree in Theatre Practice (Distinction). Her affinity with theatre began in secondary school, where she first performed on stage. Since 2014, she has been working professionally as a theatre actor and educator. Her recent acting credits include Four Horse Road (The Theatre Practice), Art Studio (Nine Years Theatre), Lao Jiu The Musical (The Theatre Practice), IgnorLand of its Time - Dakota Crescent (DramaBox), The Magic Paintbrush (i Theatre) and Kumarajiva (Toy Factory).

Fong Cheh

Sabrina Sng is an independent performer and performance maker, who works across disciplines to explore means and modes of expression. Having been awarded the NAC Undergraduate Arts Scholarship in 2013, she graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts (Experimental Theatre Wing) with a first class honors in Theatre Arts. After her time at the SITI Conservatory in the following year, she returned to Singapore to continue developing and challenging her arts practice. She worked with Rei Poh on Attempts: Singapore (M1 Fringe Festival 2018), and most recently with Koh Hui Ling on Excavations a theatrical tour at the Singapore Art Museum (Singapore Heritage Festival).

Drama Box is a non-profit contemporary theatre company with Charity status. Formed in 1990, it has since gained a respectable reputation for presenting works that raise social awareness and inculcate civic responsibility amongst Singaporeans. Our productions are fun and entertaining, yet thought-provoking and reflective.

Our works engage dialogically with the people and their socio-political conditions. We want the audience to be stimulated by the aesthetic experience, provoked to think about the issues presented, and participate actively in our works as “Spect-Actors” or “Creators”.
